An elected official in Rhode Island’s North Kingstown school district wants students who use the “wrong pronoun” in reference to transgenders to be punished for committing what she described as an act of “violence” against LGBTs.
In Jennifer Lima’s view, a student who “misgenders” another student “needs to be dealt with accordingly” as this is a very serious infraction, in her opinion. (Related: Some colleges and universities are pushing students to wear “pronoun pins” to indicate their chosen gender.)
Lima’s agenda involves ushering in “anti-racist” – meaning anti-white – policies into the North Kingstown school district. Her beliefs are so radically “Marxist” that she faced a recall effort last year, though it appears that failed.
Lima is very vehemently pro-critical race theory (CRT). She also adores the concept of “diversity, equity and inclusion” (DEI), which, just like CRT, involves teaching children to hate white people and worship non-white people.
Around November 12, Lima shared a post on Facebook from an activist group highlighting her own apparent belief that “Purposefully [sic] misgendering students is an act of violence. Respond accordingly.”
“I recognize that some may find the use of the word violence in this post extreme,” Lima wrote above the image.
“Violence is defined by the World Health Organization as ‘the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment or deprivation.”
Lima went on in the post to suggest that misgendering at school is an act of violence against transgenders that could cause them to experience physical or emotional harm. She then urged her followers to “deal with” students who do such a thing.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, Lima tried to claim that what she was referring to in her now-viral post is “psychological violence” and not physical violence like she implied.
“I also believe that purposely misgendering someone is an act of psychological violence when done deliberately and consistently and should be responded to accordingly,” Lima added in a statement, adding that appropriate responses to misgendering, in her mind, include “investigating and disciplining such occurrences in the same way as any other biased-based assault.”
When asked about how she views free speech and the First Amendment, Lima said she “absolutely” believes in it, “both as an elected official and an individual.” She also does not believe that a person who misgenders should be punished with violence – well, phew!
Not everyone buys what Lima is selling, though. Nicole Solas, a Senior Fellow with the Independent Women’s Forum, says she interprets Lima’s original post as trying to “justify oppressive speech restrictions on vulnerable children.”
“If you believe you’re under threat of violence then to ‘respond accordingly’ means you act in self-defense, which is a physical and often violent action taken to protect yourself,” Solas, who is also from Rhode Island, added.
“Her public call for students to ‘respond accordingly’ to non-existent violence is her own tacit call to violence against those who oppose her radical ideology.”
Solas is right: Lima’s use of the word accordingly implies that what she views as violence, misgendering, should be responded to in kind with more violence.
What Lima is proposing is to create a “hostile, paranoid school environment,” according to Solas, that will actually lead to more violence, not less, “thanks to [Lima’s] hysterical message that danger lurks around every pronoun.”
