Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed to significantly expand his country’s stockpile of Oreshnik hypersonic missiles as part of Russia’s ongoing offensives in Ukraine.
In a recent speech, the Russian leader proudly showcased his new hypersonic weapon, directly threatening Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and warning of further destruction. This statement comes as Putin intensifies his military strikes, including a devastating missile barrage that targeted Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
Kremlin forces recently launched a 90-missile blitz against Ukraine in retaliation for its use of Western-supplied long-range missiles, including American ATACMS and British Storm Shadow cruise missiles. The attack left almost a million Ukrainians without power, forcing civilians into bomb shelters. The strikes primarily targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, crippling essential services as the brutal winter approaches.
Though Putin was in Kazakhstan for the Collective Security Treaty Organization summit, he issued orders for the assault. In his speech, the 72-year-old leader blasted the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for supporting Ukraine, declaring that the alliance’s involvement made it a direct participant in the conflict. He further stated that NATO’s weapons transfers had escalated the war and justified Russia’s retaliation. In response to Ukraine’s missile strikes, Putin revealed the Oreshnik missile, a hypersonic weapon he claimed was essential to counter NATO’s support of Ukraine. The missile, according to Putin, is capable of traveling at Mach 10 (7,673 miles per hour) and reaching temperatures up to 4,000 degrees Celsius (7,232 degrees Fahrenheit). He boasted that the weapon is unmatched by anything in any other military’s arsenal, capable of delivering a blow so powerful it would be comparable to a nuclear strike.
Putin warned that if Ukraine continues to provoke Russia, the Oreshnik missile would be equipped with explosives, causing catastrophic destruction.
The first-ever launch of the Oreshnik missile occurred last week when it was used to strike the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. While the strike was described as a test, Putin made it clear that further attacks could include explosive warheads. He also claimed that Russia has numerous Oreshnik missiles ready for deployment, along with other advanced weaponry. Putin vowed to increase missile production by 30 percent, asserting that Russia’s arsenal is far superior to NATO’s.
Putin’s rhetoric and military actions indicate a significant escalation in Russia’s approach to the war. His promise that Russia has “ten times more” advanced weaponry than NATO underscores his determination to overwhelm Ukraine and its allies with superior firepower. The introduction of the Oreshnik missile marks a dangerous new phase in the conflict, with the potential for even more devastating strikes on Ukraine.
Putin also issued a direct threat to Zelensky, stating that Russian forces are selecting new targets in Ukraine. These could include military facilities, defense industry sites or key decision-making centers in Kyiv. Putin’s words signal his intention to escalate the war further, making it clear that Russia is prepared to intensify its offensives.
