Robert Card, the man accused of killing 18 people at a bowling alley and bar in Lewiston, Maine, has been found dead.
Law enforcement found Card’s body around 7:45 p.m. ET Friday, Oct. 27. Maine’s Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sauschuck told reporters at a news conference that Card died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. His body was found near the Androscoggin River in the Lisbon Falls area, some 10 miles from Lewiston, where the Wednesday night shooting rampage happened.
Councilor Leroy G. Walker of Auburn, Maine, said the suspect’s death will help the community move forward, but for him and the loved ones of the 18 people killed Wednesday night, Oct. 25, it means some questions might not ever be answered.
“I have mixed feelings about the whole thing because at this point we’ll have no answers from this gentleman, killer,” Walker said. “That will leave me empty forever because I wanted them so badly to find him alive. Eighteen people will never have closure no matter how hard we try.”
The shooting rampage left at least 18 people dead and 13 injured. Maine Gov. Janet Mills confirmed the shootings at a Wednesday evening press conference. They occurred at a bowling alley and a restaurant about four miles apart in Lewiston, a coastal city of about 38,500 residents just 36 miles north of Portland. “This is a dark day for Maine,” Mills told the media.
The largely rural state of 1.3 million people is considered to be among the nation’s safest. In 2022, Maine had one of the country’s lowest homicide rates at just 29 killings. Wednesday’s mass shooting saw nearly a year’s total number of reported killings in Maine occur within just minutes.
The first shooting took place a little before 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Just-In-Time Recreation, a bowling alley. Twelve minutes later, 911 calls started pouring in from a shooting at a nearby restaurant, Schemengees. Some of the victims were part of a group of deaf cornhole players who gathered at Schemengees every Wednesday night.
Card, 40, received inpatient psychiatric care this summer after he started hearing voices, according to his sister-in-law. “He thought he heard voices at multiple places out in public,” she related.
Before his death, an arrest warrant for Card had been issued for eight counts of murder, accounting for the number of victims positively identified. His home in Bowdoin was also surrounded by trucks and vans full of armed state and federal law enforcement agents.
Richard Goddard, who lives near Card in Bowdoin, told media outlets on Thursday that Card knew the area well and authorities could experience difficulties in tracking him down. “This is his stomping ground. He grew up here,” said Goddard. “He knew every ledge to hide behind, every thicket.”
