Illegal immigrants in New York City (NYC) have refused accommodation in taxpayer-funded tent cities, instead returning to posh Manhattan hotels they were formerly housed in.
Assemblywoman Jaime Williams, a Democrat, managed to film one such incident that happened on Nov. 12. A group of illegal aliens was transported to the Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, which had been converted into a tent city to address the migrant influx. The site, part of a national park located in the southeast of the NYC borough, is expected to hold 2,000 people.
However, the furious illegals were immediately loaded on a bus back to Manhattan. They complained that they had jobs back in the city, and their kids had schools to attend. Williams, who represents the 59th district in the New York State Assembly, was left stunned.
She then approached a health worker about what just transpired. “When I asked him why did they leave immediately like that, he said the people … were scared,” Williams recounted. “They weren’t sure what they were doing here; they don’t want to be here, and they asked to leave.”
The state representative also noted the tent city’s distance between where migrants worked and where their children attended school. “They said, ‘It’s so isolated; how could I possibly get back and forth to work?’ or ‘Getting my children to school from here would be insane.’ So they all asked to leave,” said Williams.
One migrant said he was going back to the Roosevelt Hotel, which NYC Mayor Eric Adams turned into a migrant shelter following its 2020 closure. “We didn’t know we were coming here; they just said they were taking us to a shelter,” he said. “I cannot stay here, this is crazy.”
Another migrant who brought his family with him also expressed his intent to return to Manhattan. He told the New York Post: “I work in the Bronx; my kids go to school in the Bronx. For us to live out here is ridiculous.”
According to a spokesperson for Adams’ office, some migrants did reject the tent city at Bennett Field. However, some migrants from the initial bus Williams recorded and another that arrived two hours later stuck it out.
“As we have said time and time again, more than 139,500 asylum seekers have moved through our intake system since the spring of 2022 – all of whom have been offered vital services,” they said in a statement.
“But with more than 65,600 migrants still currently in our care, and thousands more continuing to arrive every week, we have used every possible corner of NYC and are quite simply out of good options to shelter migrants.”
However, one bus driver said he was “shocked” when the migrants turned and left. He added that “only a few people stayed” at the tent city. (Related: Migrants leaving NYC for Canada by bus – on taxpayer dime.)
Williams, meanwhile, deemed the site “a disaster waiting to happen.” She also expressed concern that winter weather was starting to arrive at the Big Apple.
“It’s not the ideal location for anyone to live,” the assemblywoman said. “There’s no supermarket. There’s no infrastructure.”
NYC has by far received the highest number of border crossers of any other northern city – more than 120,000 in just 18 months. The city is currently taking care of more than 60,000 migrants in hundreds of emergency shelters, most of them being bused from Texas through the efforts of Gov. Greg Abbott.
Adams and four other mayors of sanctuary cities – Chicago, Los Angeles, Denver and Houston – have united to demand the White House intervene as their cities become overwhelmed with thousands of illegals arriving every day. While President Joe Biden has asked Congress for $1.4 billion for this purpose, the five mayors said in a letter that the amount is insufficient and asked for a bigger $5 billion.
