An election judge from Minnesota has been sued over allegations that he allowed people not properly registered to vote in the 2024 elections.
Timothy Michael Scouton, the head election judge for Badoura Township Precinct in Hubbard County, has been charged and arrested by the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office for allegedly accepting votes from unregistered individuals and neglecting his duties as an election official.
On election night, an election auditor notified authorities that at least 11 voters were permitted to cast their votes despite not completing the required registration forms to verify their identities. Another judge informed the police that she was not aware of the proper forms and that Scouton instructed her to bypass the proper registration procedures.
Meanwhile, local officials, including the Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon, have expressed concern over the allegations. Simon’s office described the charges as “very serious,” emphasizing the importance of all election judges adhering to election laws.
“These allegations are extremely serious and must be fully and thoroughly investigated,” Simon’s office said in a statement. “Election judges take an oath to administer elections under the law, a deliberate failure to do so is unlawful and a betrayal of the public trust. Minnesota’s elections rely on the dedication and public service of 30,000 people and they are required to conduct their work fairly, impartially, and within the letter of the law. The Hubbard County Auditor took prompt and correct action in notifying local authorities of the uncovered discrepancies so they could investigate.”
Voter fraud and election integrity were major issues during the 2024 presidential race, with states purging many ineligible voters leading up to the vote. According to the National Pulse, North Carolina announced it purged over 747,000 ineligible voters in September, which included nearly 200,000 deceased people.
Similarly, Texas, removed over a million voters from the state rolls, including illegal aliens.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) issued guidelines for state and local officials that one former DOJ attorney said were tantamount to political intimidation. Gene Hamilton, a former attorney with the DOJ and Department of Homeland Security, stated that the guidelines discourage officials from effectively ensuring that only eligible voters can participate in the election.
Meanwhile, in Springfield, Missouri, county clerks said they turned away people at the polls because they were not registered to vote.
One person tells “On Your Side,” a local show on a local network, that they were registered but did not get a ballot.
“Some of the amendments affect me personally,” said Mia Thimesch, a 20-year-old first-time voter from Christian County. “It was my first time. It’s just sad.”
She said in an interview that she registered last year at the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles – handled by the state’s Department of Revenue. She did not get to vote when she went to her polling place with her driver’s license.
“I don’t know if it’s a system error or something else happened,” she said.
A spokesperson from the Revenue Department said that Thimesch declined to register when she got her license. However, Thimesch said she had a voter ID card but tore it up and threw it away because “what’s the point of this if I can’t even vote?” she asked.
Meanwhile, Christian County Clerk Paula Brumfield reported that they had about 2,300 phone calls on the election day.
“We don’t want to turn a voter away, but if they’re not in the system in the state of Missouri, then we can’t find them,” she said.
“You have to be registered to vote four weeks in advance,” said Jay Ashcroft, Missouri Secretary of State. “We had people that were calling up saying hey I just registered, where do I vote? They can vote in the future, but we need to do the process that you are who you say you are.” (Related: Supreme Court blocks attempt to restore names of around 1,600 non-citizens to Virginia voter rolls.)
